At 1:56 p.m. on Oct. 3, Appalachian Power's lake-level table put Smith Mountain at 789.12 feet. Full pond is 795.00, so the lake was 5.88 feet below full. The SML Charity Home Tour has already announced that docks at all eight homes on this year's tour would be closed to boats. The Smith Mountain Eagle reported that the notice said the water "continues to be too low for boaters to safely use the docks."
That notice describes most of fall 2026 here. The events still on the calendar between now and Thanksgiving are ones you drive to. The lake is still worth seeing, but you'll mostly be looking at it from the shore. The schedule that sets the water level won't change until the lake refills, and that depends on rain.
Why the Reading Isn't Climbing Yet
AEP posts a short note each morning on its Water Levels & Flows page. At 5 a.m. on Oct. 3, inflow to the Smith Mountain Project was 260 cubic feet per second, and discharge from Leesville was 408 cfs. That means about 148 cfs more was leaving the two-lake system than coming in. A lake can't rise while that's true.
The releases follow a set of rules. AEP must meet minimum releases under its Water Management Plan, and low inflow can pull the lake down even when the company is releasing less. In July, AEP said the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality had approved a variance. It let Trigger 3 of that plan start early, on July 22, which allowed AEP to cut flows below Leesville further. AEP said earlier steps under the plan had already saved about two feet of lake level. The variance runs until the lake gets back to 795 feet.
The state's Oct. 2 drought update shows why that hasn't happened. DEQ kept the Roanoke River region under a drought emergency advisory. That region includes Bedford, Franklin, Campbell and Pittsylvania counties. DEQ said the region "has received less rainfall than other areas of the Commonwealth." Over the past 30 days, parts of it got less than half their normal rain. Of all the reservoirs DEQ tracks, Smith Mountain Lake and John H. Kerr Reservoir were the two still "much-below-average."
The same bulletin had some better news. The National Weather Service expects a strong El Niño to bring higher-than-normal rain to Virginia this fall and winter. The state's Drought Monitoring Task Force was scheduled to meet again on Oct. 6. Until the lake refills, expect fall here to stay shore-based.
Two Events That Already Adjusted
The first cancellation was announced back in summer. Organizers called off the Antique and Classic Charity Boat Show, which had been set for Sept. 12 at Goodhue Boat Co.-Blackwater. They said they weren't confident the water would be deep enough for a quality show.
The Charity Home Tour went another way. It's still running Oct. 9 through 11, but only by land. Jeanne and Joe Wagoner founded the tour in 1991. Proceeds go to local nonprofits that provide food assistance, shelter, emergency services, health support and youth programs. This year it features eight lakefront homes in Moneta, Huddleston, Union Hall and Penhook. The Moneta stops include a Cape Cod-style home in the Baywatch subdivision off Scruggs Road and a lake cottage on Cougar Trail. Organizers still encourage visitors to "stroll down to the docks and take a look."
Local businesses have been dealing with low water since early summer. In a June WDBJ7 report, Gills Creek Marina manager Jerry Godsey said the marina had added 20 tons of stone to its ramp. He also said most ramps on the lake were unusable at that point. In July, WFXR reported that Bridgewater Marina's deep water was keeping its docks open and that Mangos Bar and Grill had steady business. Some boat owners were leaving their boats at the marina because their home docks didn't have enough water or their lift cables wouldn't reach. Those reports describe summer conditions. The lake has dropped since then, so check directly with any marina or ramp before you tow a boat there this month.

The new courts on First Watch Drive
The Smith Mountain Lake YMCA scheduled a ribbon-cutting for Oct. 1 for its new outdoor pickleball courts. Executive director Andrea Fansler said the courts would give members and the community another place to exercise and socialize. The Y's tournament schedule still lists the Oct. 15 grand opening event. That makes these courts one of the few new places to go around the lake this fall.
A theater group working toward its own building
Center Rep's production of "Zombie Prom" runs at Westlake Cinema from Oct. 22 through Nov. 1. Director Matt Karris said the show brings local and visiting performers together. The Smith Mountain Lake Center is also working to buy the cinema building, with longer-term plans for live shows, classes and community events. If that purchase goes through, the lake area gets an indoor venue that doesn't depend on the season or the water level.
The State Park after Labor Day
Smith Mountain Lake State Park doesn't close for fall. Beach service, the snack bar and boat rentals ended after Labor Day. The hiking trails stay open all year, the cabins are open year-round, and the campground runs through early December. Shorefire requires pre-registration, and the entry fee covers park parking. Owl-oween is free, though the regular parking fee applies. It includes crafts, games, hay-wagon rides, a trick-or-treat trail and a hot-dog and marshmallow roast. The Thanksgiving Turkey Trot is hosted by LAT Wellness Studio, and part of the proceeds goes to the park.
Bridgewater Plaza on Nov. 7
The Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber's SML Chili Festival runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tastings are from noon to 2, and awards are at 3. Admission is $10. The Chamber also lists overflow parking and a free shuttle from Ecumenical Trinity Church. Since most people will arrive by car, plan on using the shuttle if the main lot fills up.
Two Plans That Still Depend on the Water
A couple of dates on the late-fall calendar were set before anyone knew how low the lake would get.
- Santa's arrival on Nov. 28. The Chamber's Small Business Saturday page, first posted in January, says Santa arrives by boat at 11 a.m. He then visits SML Coffee House from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Mango's hosts holiday craft vendors on its patio from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. We haven't found any update on how Santa will arrive at current water levels. The shopping and the coffee-house visit take place on land either way.
- The Lighted Boat Parade. The Chamber's general events page lists a November parade route from Virginia Dare Marina to Bridgewater Plaza and back. We haven't seen a confirmed 2026 date or status yet. Look for an announcement from the organizers before planning around it.
Whether either of these happens on the water depends on how much the lake rises over the next several weeks. AEP updates its table and morning note daily, and inflow compared with Leesville discharge shows which way the lake is heading. DEQ's task force reviews the drought advisory at regular meetings, and the next one was set for Oct. 6. On Oct. 3, the lake needed 5.88 more feet to reach full pond, and the Trigger 3 variance stays in place until it does.
